| Chinese Crested Infomation The Chinese Crested make ideal companion dogs. They are very intelligent and make excellent watchdogs, but are not a yappy, or barky dog and if you suffer from allergies or asthma may find that this is the perfect dog for you because they don’t shed or have the dander like most breeds. The Chinese crested is a smaller dog ranging in size from 10-13 pounds average but you will find smaller ones as well. The Chinese Crested exact origin is unknown, but is believed to have evolved from the African Hairless dog which was reduced in size by the Chinese. The first Chinese Crested were imported into Great Britain in the late 1800’s and Australia in the 1975 and are now shown throughout the country. Most people don’t know the Hairless and the puff are the same breed and are born in the same litter. The long haired crested, called a ( Powderpuff), resembles a mini Afghan hound. You will get all powderpuffs if you breed two powderpuff together. The powderpuff does not carry the hairless gene. If you breed a Hairless to a powderpuff you will get both types of puppies in the litter. They are exactly the same dog except that the powderpuff has allot more hair. Due to the hairless gene the teeth in the Hairless may be smaller and the tiny “tusks” will extend forward, but the powderpuff should have regular canine teeth. A caution about breeding a hairless to a hairless, you could end up with a dominant lethal gene which a fatal gene is causing 25% of the puppies to die or be born dead or to die in the uterus causing complications for the mother. I do know of people breeding Hairy Hairless to hless though and getting healthy puppies. Skin Care for the Hairless When the weather is dry like in the winter months you must keep your hairless dog moisturized. Use a good lotion you would use without Lanolin. You should bathe your dogs about every week or so in the summer and every 2 weeks in the winter. You should use a shampoo that is especially formulated for dogs.. Some breeder’s use an oil treatment on there dogs but be careful not to use anything with Lanolin. Some dogs can have a reaction to it. Most of the crested will go through a “teenage” period. This means that you may start to see more black heads and pimples to surface on the skin. This is normal, but some dogs will have no problem and others will have serious problems. . ( The best secret is to keep them clean.) If the problem persist or get worst, you may try a lotion like Benzyl or a gentle scrub like Noxzema. You can use most products you use for pimples on your Chinese crested. If you are keeping your Powderpuff as a pet only and don’t like the upkeep on the long coat allot of people give them a Hairless cut. They look just as cute and are easier to keep up with. The Chinese crested is a very Unique dog and an eye catching breed and don’t forget they are basically Hypoallergenic for all you allergy suffers. I hope this has help with some of your questions.
